We all enjoy a bargain. Markets, fairs and carboots have become rather trendy in recent times. Flea markets in the UK offer an endless array of products that provide a more sustainable way to consume. The demand for vintage and second-hand products often comes from those searching for originality at a low price.
Flea markets and antique fairs can be a great source of information if you know how to pump the dealers for their knowledge. Don’t avoid the regulars and traders at carboots, they are often just as interested in clearing stock as the amateur seller, and likely to do a deal when you buy in bulk/ more than one item, especially the house clearance traders. The one off sellers come in 2 camps either selling off as cheap as possible, or still have an emotional attachment so prices are inflated. Don’t be put off, be polite, strike up a conversation, you might find out provenance that makes a deal worthwhile.
Personally, i’m put off by the slick and professionally displayed pitches, this goes for markets and fairs as well as carboots. I think this is because prices are often inflated, and if the display is of only one sort of goods, then that’s their field of expertise and haggling will often be tight. Still, if you know what you are after, and know the going market price then don’t let me put you off, this is aimed more at the generalist amongst you, the magpies and bargain hunters!
What’s most important, enjoy yourself!
